Among all the Best of Metropulse wins for some truly legitimately good places – including a couple of my usual haunts – and sandwiched between the occasional half-baked critique slipped in while handing out laurels (c’mon, it’s the ‘best of’ for a mid-sized Southern city, not a review for the Michelin Guide – let the winners have their day in the sun), is a little gem on the city’s best writer – Jack Neely.
OK, so he’s a MP staffer and won the MP award. But I got a great laugh ouf of the short. The capsule to go along with the win began with “Irregardless … ” – the literary equivalent of fingernails on a chalkboard. For those of you who believe that’s a false word and would ususally stop reading anything – and have – upon coming across it, keep going.
If you’re in on the gag, you’re looking at a run on sentence, bad syntax and chunkily beautiful writing. Gotta know the rules to break ’em, right?
And a writer would appreciate this – the Best of M isn’t online yet, but you can check it out in print. Surely it’ll go live sometime soon.
Congrats, Jack. You’re a pro.
