Al Jazeera brings Knoxville (and some of its homeless and mentally ill) to the world

Al Jazeera, the international news channel, sent an English news crew over to talk about the homeless in the city, and the effort through VMC to help those facing mental illness issues in the streets.

Kimberly Halkett, who did a little tweeting on the city today, said that she saw a lot of good stories in the Knoxville, which will be one subject in a three-part series on homelessness in America. It will have a worldwide reach through Al Jazeera English, which is headquartered in Qatar.

“Tennessee, incorrectly, is a flyover state in the minds of so many people,” she said, adding that news doesn’t just happen in L.A., New York or D.C. “These places (Knoxville) are where the real stories are, and the real people.”

So how did an international news station with nearly 70 worldwide bureaus get tipped on this story? Well, Halkett and her producer said, it was from this story we ran back in February. Got to love the Internet.
